  Family Ties

Sindhi has a specific word for every particular family relation; for example, while in English the term 'sister-in-law' can be used to refer to one's sibling's wife, one's spouse's sister or one's spouse's sibling's wife, Sindhi has a different word for each of these relations.

The family trees below depict the different Sindhi terms by representing the relations in a graphical manner. All terms are stated in relation to the user (). English terms are also provided for comparison. In addition, a categorised table is provided at the bottom of this section listing all of the terms in English and in Sindhi.

  Numbers

Numbers in Sindhi follow the Indian counting system. Numbers 21 through 99 are read by saying the second digit before the first digit, e.g. 32 would be pronounced b̤a-ṭīha (two-thirty). Numbers greater than one thousand are separated every three digits for the first thousand, and then every two digits; this corresponds to the way they are counted since a new word is introduced at every second power of ten after the first thousand, instead of at every third power of ten as they would be in English, e.g. 1,230,450, read as 1 million, 230 thousand, 450 in English, would be written as 12,30,450 and read as 12 lakha, 30 hazāra, 450 in Sindhi.
